Method
What is handpoke?
Handpoke (or stick-and-poke) is a tattooing method in which the artist manually pricks the ink into the skin, dot by dot, without the use of a machine.
This centuries-old, artisanal process is a technique that was already used by the ancient Egyptians, the Vikings, and Polynesian, Mesoamerican, and Asian tribes, among others.
The process takes more time and results in a unique, subtle, and organic outcome.
The process requires precision and, above all, a lot of patience.
Due to the slower process, the skin may experience less irritation, making it very suitable for sensitive areas.
A handpoke tattoo generally also heals faster and produces fewer scabs.
What is ceremonial tattooing?
Throughout the centuries, countless cultures have used tattoos as part of a ceremony. From the ancient Egyptians, the Vikings, pirates, and Maori, to peoples in Japan, Siberia, North and South America, and parts of Africa: tattoos often marked an important moment or turning point in life.
They were used in transition rituals, for protection, out of spiritual devotion, as a sign of identity, or to express a personal connection with ancestors, nature, or the divine.
A ceremonial tattoo is therefore so much more than just ink on the skin. It is a conscious moment of stillness in which we make space for your story, intention, and the meaning behind the design.
Whether it concerns a new beginning, a memory, personal growth, or marking an important phase of life for you: the tattoo becomes a tangible symbol of strength for what is important to you.
A kind of souvenir you can consciously look back at, and become aware again of the message immortalized in ink on your skin.
My working method
At Amfea Tattoo, I draw inspiration from the ancient tradition of ceremonial tattooing; together, we create a personal ceremony and design that reflects your unique journey.
We begin with a conversation about your intention and whether you already have a specific wish regarding the meaning of your tattoo.
Through meditation, card readings, and other spiritual tools, we gain a clearer picture of the deeper significance your tattoo holds for you.
I receive this message from my guides as well as yours. For me, your sense of safety and comfort is paramount. Every emotion and every version of yourself is welcome here. I flow with your needs and your energy.
My tattoo ceremony consists of two parts:
- The introduction and the ceremony
- The physical application of the tattoo
These two parts are scheduled separately, giving me ample time after the ceremony to bring your design to life. Once the design is ready, I send it to you with love, allowing you the time and space to connect with it. If you wish to make any changes to the design, that is always possible!
